Favorite Things

I have a vignette in my front room of some of my favorite things.

On more than one occasion, they have been hauled into the basement as we waited out a tornado warning.  Along with albums of my children's baby photos, these precious few items rank among the things worth running back into a burning home for.

I'm sure you all have a 10 items worth saving at all costs list?
These are just a few on mine.
They belonged to my grandmother who was such an important part of my life.

My grandmother's photo, taken when she was just 16 years old.

They didn't have much, but you had style with a hat like that!  I found this old photo in a box in her home when she was still living.  I myself was 16 at the time and HAD to HAVE IT.  She let me, of course.

The doorknob from her bedroom closet.

When my grandparents died and before the house was put up for market, we replaced the knob on her closet with another so I could keep this crystal one.  I used to go in that tiny pink closet as a child and look at all of her shoes and handbags... brings back a lot of memories.
Also, I think often about how many times she turned the knob over in her hand.

A blue glass crystal pitcher.
It was on a dresser in her home filled with dried flowers.
Well, the flowers have been replaced, but the pitcher still stands.
A piece like this spans decades of styles and trends.

Also in the vignette (but not on  the list because it wasn't from family), is an amazing antique sacraments certificate documenting a young girl's first communion from the 1920's...it's from the same time period as when my grandmother was child, and the town listed is the town I grew up in.  It has beautiful imagery of children receiving the blessed sacrament of First Eucharist and it is from a Polish church, which is also unique to our background.

Our faith in God is such an important part of our lives,
so I display it in this corner where it seems to fit in seemlessly.

I keep my cherished lovelies on a pedestal where I see them and pass them often.
It helps to keep memories alive and lends a certain comfort to my day.

A lovely vignette of your special memories of your Grandmother. Great thinking in replacing the closet knob too. The First Holy Communion memento is also lovely, and what great detail. My parents have a 50th and 60th anniversary certificate from the Pope and we will cherish these too.
